With teaching internationally, I have experienced how differently music theory is often times approached by musical institution. Which is to say, that often times it is almost not approached at all.
To me this is impossible to think, let alone understand. Whilst music is totally an artisanal and practical art form, it still bases itself on totally theorical grounds, which are the very basements on which we sing and play everyday. People have devoted their lives to developing a system that works perfectly to our needs, and centuries of studies and debates have piled upon each other to create the musical world that we know nowadays.
We simply cannot ignore it, and just grab a guitar or sing a song.
